Jacob Faurholt ‘Madness On The Rise’

“It’s a new year”, begins master of bittersweet indie rock Jacob Faurholt. And with it, a new soul-crushing infatuation, it seems. Madness on the Rise is a deftly crafted number about the longing of a lover estranged from his better half and the torture of wondering what their true feelings might be. And it sounds every bit as heart-wrenching as we have come to expect from our Danish troubadour.

An aching but hopeful guitar-driven tune slithers at the background and it sounds just as smooth as urgent, creating an atmosphere of lingering melancholy as he laments having to hide his feelings. “Sometimes it works”, says his weary voice. But at what cost? The quiet longing atmosphere is then shaken by a rising mist of guitars, adding some extra grit and bitterness to the atmosphere. Faurholt’s high-pitched vocals and creaky, worn-down delivery are the perfect match for this kind of dramatic world-gone-wrong fairy-tale he excels so much at. “An exorcism is all I need, I beg you to feel the same”, repeats he wishfully at the end as the guitars vociferate.

The video expands upon this fragile, hurtful sound. The gothic cartoon follows the journey of an endearing big-eyed friendly ghost of sorts, who sits alone in the sunset, then goes roaming through the night in some desolate dark woods. But don’t worry, bright-coloured blooms do show up in the background here and there. There are still some glimpses of hope in this lover’s heart.

Jacob Faurholt records his music in his home studio in Horsens, Denmark, and releases his work through his own independent label Raw Onion Records. This is the lead-off single from his upcoming album “When the Spiders Crawl”, out on 26 August.
