Ella Tobin – Wanna Go Home

‘In this crowded room I feel so alone’ sings one of the chorus lines in Ella Tobin’s ‘Wanna Go Home’. And as much as we’re reluctant to admit it, it’s a feeling we’ve all felt. Many songs are dedicated to the high of the party, the club, the night you don’t want to end, but there aren’t as many that are dedicated to leaving the party. But sometimes, you have to.

Ella Tobin is a singer-songwriter based in London. After recently releasing her debut single ‘The Ghost’, which received support from the likes of BBC Introducing, she’s back with her sophomore track.

‘Wanna Go Home’ is a haunting, ambient pop tune with rich production and sad-girl melancholy.

The lyrics are carefully crafted and evocative – ‘I am suffocating, breathing in the smoke of your cigarette…’ – with hints of jaded observation as well – ‘Now everybody’s kissing strangers, hoping they might find somebody to love…’. The song evokes the distress and isolation when you find yourself at a party you just don’t want to be at – ‘all I know is I want to go home’ – but is saved from melodrama by Tobin’s restrained vocal delivery, she keeps it whispery yet compelling. The melodies float along easily, complemented by ethereal backing vocals.

The production is full of shining little details, centred around haunting synths but including hints of tense strings, and classically-influenced piano lines. When the beat kicks in, it moves into something more 80s influenced, reminiscent of acts like Haim and The Weeknd, but with the singer-songwriter sensibility of acts like Lana Del Rey and Florence + the Machine. It’s an assured and haunting track for a new artist.
