Cam Thomas Returns With An Anthem For The ‘Underrated’

Fresh rap with a neo-soul groove from Cam Thomas.

Cam Thomas – Underrated

Rap has always been the musical language of aspiration, of grinding, of working your way up – there’s a reason why ‘started from the bottom now we here’ is such an iconic quote. Cam Thomas’s latest track ‘Underrated’ adds to that catalogue, saying that his work transcends numbers and riches – ‘Fuck democracy, cos my success ain’t up for debate’.

Cam Thomas is an up-and-coming hip-hop and rap artist based in London – keen RCM readers may have spotted his name here before. With an EP and several singles under his belt, his live career was halted by the pandemic but is now back on track, with performances at Brixton Jamm and O2 Academy Islington.

‘Underrated’ is a confident release with plenty of style and Thomas’s self-assured flow, backed up by a hip-hop and neo-soul-influenced track.

Thomas describes his determination to keep going and never back down with some slick lyrics – ‘I’ll probably break a leg before I run from them’ – yet slips in some vulnerability too, admitting ‘I would kill to be the face of the youth’ and ‘I say a prayer for all the blessings that I took for granted’.

There’s a smooth groove combining a distorted vocal hook, ticking piano chords and some classic hip-hop drums that anchors the track and gives it a bit of neo-soul flavour. It’s a track with bags of style and raw energy, which should catch the interest of rap fans, amongst others. At 2.38, it doesn’t overstay its welcome, but anyone interested in hearing more should look out for Cam Thomas’s debut full-length album, due to land in May 2023.
