The Mallees may have just released their acclaimed debut single ‘Losing Our Minds’ last month, but they’re showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. With their new track, ‘Stasis,’ the Portsmouth four-piece build on the positive momentum by revealing a darker, more personal side.

This track is intimate and relatable, but most of all it totally rocks.
The idea for ‘Stasis’ originally came from a journal entry, though it eventually grew into something else entirely. The song’s narrator starts out by divulging the extent to which he’s struggling mentally, and it’s clear that he’s desperately trying to get better. But due to societal expectations, it can be difficult for people to ask for help — or be taken seriously when they do — and our narrator is no stranger to that struggle. Those sentiments build to a chorus that sees him repeatedly wondering how he can escape the stasis he finds himself in.
The song’s relentless bassline and moody production make this track one that evokes memories of hearing Joy Division’s iconic album Unknown Pleasures for the very first time. But mix that together with a passionate, gritty, chorus and you get ‘Stasis’ — a true lovechild of 80s post-punk and 90s grunge.
In addition to the release of ‘Stasis,’ The Mallees just played their first-ever headline show at Portsmouth’s local music club neu waves at The Loft in Southsea. And with a series of singles yet to be released, The Mallees’s second half of 2023 is sure to be even more exciting than their first.
