Welsh rapper Charlie J has released his second EP, ‘A Moment’s Notice’ which is a love letter to 00s Hip-Hop and Neo-soul.

Charlie J is a rapper, producer, and songwriter currently based in Porthcawl, South Wales, it’s safe to say that his life has been anything but common, growing up as a triplet with two mothers and living in different places all over the world, these unique experiences gave Charlie a very distinctive way to see life and we can hear it reflected in his music.
2021 was a milestone in Charlie’s career, his debut EP ‘Middle Times’ allowed him to have radio airplay on BBC Introducing Wales, BBC Introducing West Yorkshire, Radio Cardiff, and Bridge FM.
This year promises to be significant as well for this talented MC, with the release of his second EP ‘A moment’s notice’.
This work is a 6 track album that features collaborations with Ogun, MEZCAL, Katy Mumford, and also KwanLi who also produced the album so Charlie J could focus on his rhymes:
“I normally produce my own music, but I really wanted to focus on my songwriting and flow for this project. I met KwanLi over Twitter and became a huge fan of his. It’s been a great challenge for me, this project.”
A Moment’s Notice can be dissected in two fundamental aspects: love and freedom, first we have the two opening tracks ‘The One’ and ‘Swiftly’ both well-crafted romantic songs, Charlie’s verses about past relationships go hand to hand with KwanLi’s chill production.
Next, we have ‘Free (interlude)’ which sets the tone for the rest of the album, as the name suggests, this song talks about the freedom that comes with following your dreams and doing what you love for a living but always watching your steps, this is a theme that we can hear constantly in the record, particularly in ‘Carried Away’.
‘Real’ works as a window through Ogun and Charlie’s past, remembering their struggles growing up and being mocked, something that became a big inspiration for both of them.
Finally, the homonymous single of this album is the perfect closer, being another slow romantic jam full of swag and creative poetry.
A Moment’s Notice is an introspective look into the life of an exceptional artist.
A Moment’s Notice is one of the most polished underground hip hop works that we’ve had the pleasure to listen to so far in 2022, there is a significant and obvious lyrical maturity, along with the marvellous collaborations. Charlie J has taken a step in the right direction with this EP.
