Motivated by their love of the 80s, Yorkshire’s Alternative rockers The Pretty Ugly try to make sense of break-ups with their new single ‘That’s Such A Girl Thing To Say’.
The Pretty Ugly – That’s Such A Girl Thing To Say
Four-piece The Pretty Ugly, isn’t your typical Alt-rock band, being described at one point as looking like they ‘met at a bus stop’, this collective takes a lot of pride in their obsession with the 80s, a decade that plays a crucial role in their sound, making this group the intersection where past meets present, musically speaking of course.
A combination of shimmering guitars, a lively bass line, colourful synths, pulsating drums, and a memorable sing-along chorus gives life to this upbeat melody.
But one of the most interesting aspects of this piece is how the lyrics contrast with the apparent cheerfulness of the track, narrating a not-so-happy anecdote regarding the frontman Jimmy. About this subject, the band stated:
“The song came from the realisation that frontman Jimmy’s girlfriend at the time was cheating on him. The controversial title was picked purely because it reflects perfectly the extreme irrational emotions that somebody goes through when going through an awful break-up like that. However, in our typical fashion, we dressed the song up as an alt-rock, indie, punky upbeat tune with a chorus to die for. It’s a real earworm.”
That’s Such A Girl Thing To Say it’s a delightful melody that finds a midpoint between its exquisite instrumentation and a highly personal theme.
It might be the superb performance, the personal lyrics, their sense of humour, or a mixture of all these things combined, but the fact is that The Pretty Ugly is doing things the right way. Now it’s just time to wait and see what the future holds for this incredible quartet.
