The Chase Aims High On ‘Not The F*cking Game Show’

Nottingham alternative rock quartet The Chase has finally released their debut EP, this first instalment excels at engaging the listener with its musical palette, and sense of humour.

The Chase – Not The F*cking Game Show

For The Chase, there was a certain level of expectation after sharing superb tracks like Death of Me and I Just Can’t Believe We Share The Same Name, luckily their debut Not The F*cking Game Show is a great introduction to this skilled band

The name of this EP is not only a clever inside joke regarding the band’s name and a certain renowned TV show but also a fantastic idea:

If my mind was a TV and you were flicking through the channels, each track on this EP would be a different TV show. From drama to comedy to biopic, it’s an anthology of what it’s like navigating through your 20s. Not the F*cking Game Show is a snapshot of the band throughout the turbulent ups and downs of the last few years. It’s an insight to us as people and the band’s personality is imprinted on every song from start to finish” said the band.

Not The F*cking Game Show is a sound-defining opus full of noteworthy moments and genuine lyricism.

This EP was an enjoyable experience to listen to, particularly for the fun concept behind it. Due to its variety, it never felt dull or repetitive, every tune was indeed like a different show and exploring it was the equivalent of zipping through channels getting more and more excited for the next one.

The album starts on a high note with Black Cloud, an energized banger with delightful keyboard passages and frenetic riffs, as well as an out-of-this-world solo, there is a reason why this jam was BBC Nothingham’s track of the week.

Followed immediately by I’m The Man, a more blues-oriented piece with self-awareness in its swaggering lyrics, that also showcases the virtuosity of these four young musicians.

The first half of this work reaches its climax with Live To Die, which is one of the best compositions in this collection, the catchy hooks, and post-punk influence brings a strong reminiscence of bands like The Editors.

Set The World To Rights is the perfect middle ground for this auditive odyssey working as the ballad of this EP. The slower tempo and the acoustic guitar are a fine addition to an already resourceful anthology.

And just when you thought that you had this band figured out comes La La La, an upbeat Ska tune that brings back the frenzy but in a very different way than the opening melodies, with its contagious chorus and off-beat rhythms.

Finally, In The Queue ends this EP in the best way possible with an acoustic rendition of this track at the 2Fly Studios.

Not The F*cking Game Show ticks all the right boxes, The Chase made an outstanding Extended Play with a little bit of everything,  solidifying this act as one of the most thrilling debuts this year. its versatility guarantees to keep you guessing and wondering what they will do next.
