Old School Reasons – ‘Can’t Keep Me Down’
Punk is often the musical language of rebellion and anarchy, but let’s spare a thought for our more positive punk friends out there – you can want to crash the system but also have a nice day with your mates. It’s this side of the spectrum Old School Reasons lean into on ‘Can’t Keep Me Down’, delivering a message of self-belief and resilience.
Old School Reasons are an alt-rock/punk-pop four-piece hailing from the UK. After a hiatus, the band are back in 2023 with a refreshed line-up and singles ready to go.
‘Can’t Keep Me Down’ is a driving pop-punk-rock track with nostalgic influences and an infectious energy.
The lyrics are reflective, perhaps bordering on the heavy with lines like ‘Need space for my own thoughts…the older I get, the less I trust’, but balanced out with positive thinking like ‘have confidence in my convictions…gotta get myself back up off the ground’. The call and response hooks – ‘Believe in me, you can’t keep me down’ – are easy to catch on to, and would work well in a live setting. The lead vocals are delivered with gusto, tackling the classic pop melodies, but would benefit from some stronger vocal production to bring them to the forefront.
The production centres around a hooky, wistful guitar riff, with skilled energetic drumbeats and resounding chords to build a nice chunk of sound. Fans of acts like Jimmy Eat World and Blink 182 will be in familiar territory here – an easy track to enjoy.
