Monokino Channels Billy Idol On New Single ‘Baby’

Dutch producer Monokino has released ‘Baby’ the 4th single of his upcoming new album.

Monokino – Baby

George van Wetering, better known as Monokino, is a producer and visual artist who currently resides between Nanjing, Shanghai, and Amsterdam. With 2 LPs in his career Fake Virtue (2009) and Human Error (2013), Monokino has gained a strong following all over the world in the last couple of years.

This is one of those projects that is impossible to classify into just one genre, doing so would be unfair to the amount of effort and quality that George puts into his music, there is a mixture of influences and sounds here, like garage rock, psychedelic, electronica and synth-pop (just to name a few).

After releasing 3 critically acclaimed singles (Your Underground, No Return, and Bend or Break) Monokino recently premiered ‘Baby’, this song is quite different from the previous instalments, while songs like No Return and Your Underground had a more robust production and composition, Baby is a more straightforward track, with a clear punk influence showcasing fast riffs and hyper beats.

Baby is an insightful, fast-paced anthem about the struggles of a relationship.

The lyrics are a fascinating element of this tune, which were loosely based on a past relationship:

I saw myself driving a racing car, singing ‘Baby’ in this Billy Idol kind of way. I was never enough for someone who claimed that I was her one and only. She often wanted to be alone, but when I was gone, it was not good either. Some days I was too feminine, other days just too masculine. People like Billy – in a speeding car – would have let go a long time ago already for sure.”

It’s also worth mentioning that the music video for this piece was made by George himself, in this visual work we can see characters made entirely on ASCII, which blend perfectly with the aesthetic of the song.

Monokino’s third album is expected to be released later in 2022.
