Livvy English – ‘Meant To Be’

Is there such a thing as fate, and what role does it play in our lives? I’ll let the
philosophers and scientists work that one out, but it can’t be denied we’ve all
had the feeling that fate, the universe, the moon, whoever you like to blame, is
interfering in our lives. Luckily, sometimes it’s for the good, and that’s what
Livvy English conveys here – that happy feeling that you’re right where you’re
‘meant to be’.

Livvy English is a Brighton-based singer and songwriter. After building up her
vocal and gig experience, she’s finally taking the plunge on releasing original
songs with this debut single. ‘Meant To Be’ is an upbeat acoustic pop track
with a driving beat and an empowering message. ‘Been caught in a trap,
was losing my way’, begin English’s confessional lyrics.

There are hints of darkness to the story, as she references ‘nothing holding me back, no one controlling me’, but by and large these lyrics keep it relentlessly positive.
English is ready for a new era of life with ‘no doubt in my mind, now the stars
are aligned’, conceding ‘this is how it’s meant to be’. Her voice is strong, with a
quavering yet sultry tone, delivering the familiar pop melodies well.

The production has a breezy, summer-journey feel to it, with a driving bass
and stomping drums complementing the cheery guitars – there are some fun
little riff moments that hark back to a more vintage time. There are some
whistling synths, hand claps to clap along to, and some juicy harmonic
moments that make you want more. This is a fun accessible pop single and a
strong debut.
