Katie Wellenberg – Play With My Heart

Katie’s influences include Miranda Lambert, Sheryl Crow, Linda Perry, and Alanis Morissette. She says she is deeply inspired by female songwriters who “speak the truth and understand the alchemy that music making really is.”

In 2020, she released her debut album ‘Root To Rise’. Her follow-up album, ‘Time Will Tell’ is set to be released in November 2022 and is comprised of 8 songs that will take you on a “journey through a romantic relationship, from love to loss through grief and ultimately towards healing and renewal.”  In 2017 and 2020, Katie was a finalist in the German Songwriting Awards and a nominee in the “Music for Motion Pictures” category in the 2019 US Songwriting Awards.

“Play With My Heart” is an Alt-Country/Americana track and the third and final single before the release of her upcoming album, ‘Time Will Tell’.  It is about the fear of realizing that perhaps the person you’ve opened your heart up to may not be fully committed in your relationship. The song’s message is delivered with raw, emotional intensity and honesty through Katie’s lyrics and compelling vocals.

The intro opens with a slow, solemn melody of a solo acoustic guitar accompanied by a soft, yet commanding piano that compliments the arrangement. Katie enters the stage with gentle yet strong vocals that have an underlying angst. The opening lyrics convey to that this is not a song about getting your heart played with and then ultimately broken. Katie’s vocals permeate with a steely resolve that make you feel she is looking for a different ending.

There is no anticipation or build-up to the chorus but you can feel the emotional shift. Her vocals are tinged with heartache but also with determination as she pleads with the other person to stop playing with her emotions and make her question their feelings.

Coming out of the chorus, the first three lines of the next verse lay bare the emotional peril of the other person’s actions on her state of mind. But then, you are suddenly pulled into a very brief, but climatic moment when she drives home her built-up frustration with the person and tells them to explicitly stop ruining her life.

You then slide effortlessly back once again into the chorus where the moment has dissipated and the heartache returns until you find yourself abruptly at the bridge. The first line captures you with a clever melodic and vocal emphasis on each word, delivering a last-minute of explanation of the full commitment she is looking for from the other person.

‘Play With My Heart’ showcases the intense emotional tug-of-war within yourself over the realization that you’ve opened yourself up to someone who isn’t willing to be that committed to the relationship.

Katie Wellenberg is a singer-songwriter who can weave a compelling storyline that tugs at the heartstrings but leaves an indelible message.
