Continuing their rise within the UK independent scene, Strangeways bring plenty of attitude and sharp irreverence to their new single, Sgt. Citizen.
Strangeways – Sgt. Citizen
Over the last two years, Strangeways have steadily built momentum. The Kent-based band have released standout tracks such as The Ponds, B.P.R.S, and Modern Art, each collecting thousands of streams. Their growing profile has also attracted praise from respected music outlets, including Clash Magazine, Wonderland, and BBC Introducing.
The live circuit has proven equally fruitful for Strangeways. From headlining shows at The Louisiana in Bristol to supporting Carl Barât of The Libertines at the Amersham Arms and performing at a packed, sold-out 100 Club, the band has made their presence felt every single time.
With Sgt. Citizen, Strangeways continue to push forward creatively. The song was inspired by a chance encounter during the COVID lockdown period:
“When I used to go for walks during Covid, I’d trek to a particular spot to sit and read. This one time, a guy came past me and had a few things to get off his chest. I suppose it was during a time when contact with people outside of your bubble was a very valued thing. From what I remember, the man’s attitude to the world and his own self-importance annoyed me, and that stuck with me until I wrote the song,” said Tom Turner, lead singer of Strangeways.
But it is in its execution where this track truly excels, starting with a military-esque drum beat immediately followed by what brings this tune to life: Tom’s unusual vocal performance, which carries a mixture of annoyance while being equally as commanding as the militant rhythm. Of course, none of this would work without the outstanding guitar work that drives the piece forward, as well as the tight production details, such as the trumpet that adds even more urgency to the composition.
Full of wit, charm, and a personality that feels entirely its own, Sgt. Citizen is another strong release from Strangeways. The song rewards repeated listens, revealing more of its character with each spin.
And yet, this is only the beginning for this young rising outfit. With more music on the way, Strangeways are proving that sometimes the strange way is the best way.
