Glasgow’s Overhaul return with Time Flies By, marking their first full-length release in four years and a meaningful step forward in their ongoing evolution.
Overhaul – Time Flies By
Led by American singer-songwriter Andy Gallagher, Overhaul have carved out their own presence within alternative and grunge-leaning rock, built on driving rhythms, sharp guitar leads, and vocals delivered with grit and conviction. Their palette draws from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Hüsker Dü, Cheap Trick, Soul Asylum, Aerosmith, Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, and Sugar, among others, yet the band shape these influences into something distinctly theirs.
Following their 2021 release Revisited, this new 12-track album feels like a fresh chapter for Overhaul. It opens with force: I Don’t Think You Know Me and Bask set the tone through urgent riffs, tight percussion, and strong lyric work, immediately showcasing the band’s energy and songwriting approach.
The record also shifts into melodic territory. Happy Little Rocker introduces a brighter tone, lifted by layered backing vocals and reverb-rich guitars, topped with a standout solo that adds character without overshadowing the track’s core charm.
A Problem’s Just A Problem and Your Words introduce a different shade to the record, guided by steady synths and broader production choices that give both songs a theatrical lift, easy to imagine as moments where the audience raises their phones and lets the atmosphere take over.
The contrast between those larger, more expansive tracks and the more direct approach of the lead single My Brighter Day works especially well. Its encouraging lyrics and energised delivery make it a standout moment on the album.
The last track, Spanish Lilt, featuring Asttrid Young on backing vocals, showcases a slower, mood-focused instrumentation that brings the record to a thoughtful conclusion, offering a sense of calm release after the album’s more driven moments.
Time Flies By shows Overhaul in confident form, able to push hard when needed while also leaning into atmosphere and melody. It’s a rewarding listen for long-time followers and anyone drawn to raw, guitar-forward alternative rock.
