Whate brings forth ‘Majorana’s burnout’. A song about feeling like the only intellectual in the world. Their progressive punk sound encapsulates a profound message.

Whate – Majorana’s burnout

whate is a UK-based progressive punk band with Italian roots. They are influenced by no singular sound. Hints of rock, classical music and punk find their way into their progressive music.

As true to punk as they can be, whate’s lyrics are a constant cry for urgent change and a mass awakening of the population. whate like to describe themselves as ‘communist punk’, aiming to morph division into unity through thought-provoking art. The title of their newest track draws on the work of theoretical physicist Ettore Majorana, who disappeared as he foresaw the rise of nuclear weapons and wanted no part in it.

The song begins with a haunting piano flicker that quickly ascends into the clouds and back down again. The vocal layering is powerful and keeps the listener in a headlock. Vocally, the sound is incredibly powerful yet feels reserved. This reflects the powerful message but quiet acceptance of the truth that the band are trying to show. Lyrically, whAte are very intentional and keep themselves true to their mission. The poetry outlines a story of a person feeling trapped by the idiocracy that surrounds them. The line ‘we use different frequencies’ is true to the sound as well as the intention of the band, consistently alternating their approach both with their sound and their message.

You can catch whate on Saturday, November 22nd at the Dark Horse in Moseley. Tickets can be found here.

‘Majorana’s burnout is a testament to progressive punk, providing a meaningful voice to the minority. ’
