Alternative duo Phellotape channels intense emotions of longing, desire, and craving on their second single, Hungry Ghost.

Phellotape – Hungry Ghost

Phellotape is a Manchester-based duo formed by Alice Phelps and Tom Twemlow. Their collaboration began while touring with the acclaimed band The Irrepressibles, during a pivotal period marked by grief, heartbreak, and emotional rediscovery. The name Phellotape combines their surnames, symbolising their creative partnership, while “tape” reflects their knack for crafting memorable, lasting songs.

Just as distinctive as their backstory, Phellotape’s diverse and unexpected influences, ranging from Sia and Carole King to Bonobo and Rufus Wainwright, shape their unique sound. Although their career is still in its early stages, they make up for it with the high quality and intricate craftsmanship of their music, as showcased in their ambitious and captivating second single, Hungry Ghost.

It’s important to highlight the deeply raw inspiration behind this track, rooted in feelings of lust, dependence, and sorrow, as Alice Phelps explains in more detail:

It’s about a time when I was using sex like other people might use alcohol or drugs, to dissociate from pain. I wanted to disappear into this other person, but even when we were together, it wasn’t enough. It’s not a love song. It’s a song about sex. But there’s a heaviness to it — a lament.” said Alice.

With its slow tempo anchored by the captivating sound of trombones, Hungry Ghost vividly captures an almost primal, unending craving. Though the theme carries a darker tone, the track remains irresistibly engaging, pulling listeners in until the very last note.

“Hungry Ghost is a well-crafted composition, driven by its candid honesty and compelling production. Its distinctive approach to expressing raw emotion makes it a powerful sophomore release for this talented duo.”

And it’s clearly working well, as Hungry Ghost has amassed over 3,000 streams in less than a month, a strong sign that this duo is definitely heading in the right direction.
