Blending southern U.S. blues, soul, and country samples with the grit of 90s hip-hop beats, Messy Eater introduces his highly anticipated debut EP ‘Southern Fried’.
Messy Eater – Southern Fried
The project is the brainchild of musician Pete Bott, whose work has previously been spotlighted by NME, The Guardian, Notion, and BBC Radio 1. Although Messy Eater only came to life toward the end of 2024, the project has already made waves with features on BBC Introducing, Apple Music, Amazing Radio, and a range of outlets known for championing emerging artists.
Following a standout live session with BBC Introducing, Messy Eater now delivers Southern Fried in full, tapping into the experimental spirit once associated with Beck, but spinning it into something entirely his own.
Channelling a southern-inspired vibe, Slowcoach carries hints of Beck’s influence while weaving together twangy guitars, lush synths, and a dreamy production. The track peaks with soulful female backing vocals, creating a trippy listening experience packed with rich layers of sound.
On The Right Track steps away from the blues elements, leaning instead into a smooth, soul-driven sound built on infectious beats and an easygoing groove. Following it, I Think I’m Headed for a Breakdown keeps the rhythm flowing with sharp sampling and catchy layers, but shifts the mood inward, tackling themes of existential crisis with a more introspective tone.
Lifting the spirits, Keep On (I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead) is just as straightforward as its title suggests. Driven by a catchy brass sample and hypnotic bass, it feels like the perfect track to turn to when you’re low on motivation for daily life.
Finally, All Out of Time brings together hip-hop grooves with harmonica and organ samples, pairing irreverent lyricism with a lively atmosphere that maintains the carefree spirit carried throughout the EP.
“Southern Fried is both compelling and irresistible, a five-track collection designed to satisfy every craving for a bold and flavorful record.”
