Arliston Reflect On The Passage Of Time: ‘The Older I Get’

Arliston The Older I Get Live on Right Chord Music

In this live reimagined version of one of their most endearing songs, Arliston bring an even deeper emotional weight to The Older I Get, offering a renewed perspective on an already heartfelt piece.

Arliston – The Older I Get

Arliston is a duo from London consisting of Jack Ratcliffe and George Hasbury. Aiming to become the UK’s unofficial ambassadors of gloom and self-described “sad song specialists,” their music focuses on the specific time frame of the late twenties and early thirties, as well as the confusion that accompanies it. Their sound often adopts a minimalistic approach, heavily driven by melancholy.

To mark the first anniversary of their debut album Disappointment Machine, Arliston have released this live version of The Older I Get, a track originally featured on the record. Centred on themes of ageing, emotional distance, and shifting expectations, this reinterpretation introduces additional depth through its collaborators. Cellist Maddie Ashman and drummer Sam Catchpole of Hot Face both contribute, adding another layer of significance.

Recorded live at 123 Studios in Peckham with Brett Shaw (Foals, Florence and the Machine), this track is certainly a special offering, even among their catalogue of poignancy-driven songs. While the original was already a very sentimental and fragile piece, this live rendition takes those qualities and intensifies them significantly. Everything, from the subtle acoustic guitar and understated drums to the solemn cello and Jack’s heartfelt vocals, makes this melody shine with vulnerability, carrying a distinctly human touch that reaches right to the core of your emotions.

“The Older I Get is an introspective display of vulnerability, emotional to the core; it works as a clear example of musicianship with heart and soul.”

As previously mentioned, this live release marks the anniversary of their debut album, but it also serves as an emphatic announcement of a new album on the horizon, so be sure to keep an eye on this outfit because the best may still be ahead.
